The essay writing competition invited Form 2 and Form 3 secondary school students from 30 schools to submit essays reflecting on the Equity Week conversation in 2017. We received over 20 final essays from these schools that addressed issues around ‘what is fair’ in the context of public resource allocation. The essays were between 1000-1500 words.
The received essays were reviewed and whittled down to a longlist featuring the following eight students:

All the shortlisted participants have been invited for events on the Equity Week running from 13th to 17th November 2017.
The three Judges: Polycarp Otieno, Anne Muringoh and Otieno Owino, shortlisted the following three students:

The selections were based on creativity, argument and knowledge and, presentation. The winner, 1st runner’s-up and 2nd runner’s-up will be announced at a prize-giving event at the Kenyan National Theater on Wednesday 15th November from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. Each of the three finalists will read an excerpt of their essay at the event.
Prizes will be paid fees or related student costs for the 2018 school year. Kwani and IBPK will advise on the publishing of the winning essays in selected platforms in due course.
