24Nairobi Book Launch

Date: 17th June  2011,
Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Goethe-Institut Auditorium
Entry free

Three years, two major exhibitions on, countless photographer and writer meetings; Kwani Trust and Goethe Institute launch the visual and textual narrative of Nairobi, the 24Nairobi Book. Through dawn, day, dusk and night, and selected themes, the book captures the true nature of the life of a city, both from within and without.

Back in July 2007, Binyavanga Wainaina ( Founding Editor , Kwani Trust) Jimmy Gitonga (Technical Director, 24Nairobi Exhibition), Nick Ysenburg (24Nairobi Project director), and a few others started a discussion on how Nairobi had become prey to the dominant image stereotypes perpetuated by media, individuals and agencies about Africa, its abilities and peoples.

The solution they came up with: create imaginative, real-life visuals and narratives showing the life of a unique African city, using the character of the city as source material and inspiration. The aesthetic: tell the story of the city through the eyes of locally based photographers and focus on the underrepresented, unexplored working life of Nairobi. Please join us at Goethe-Institut Nairobi from 8pm on June 17th 2011 for the book launch and (re)opening of the exhibition, and to celebrate the work of Nairobi writers and photographers.

The book launch and exhibition is in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Nairobi
