 Public Reading: Life Happens

Das Leben kommt immer dazwischen

An autobiography by Auma Obama

Her first ever public reading of her autobiography in English

Dr. Auma Obama left Kenya for Germany in the late 80’s to study
and lived there for 16 years. Her autobiography, whose title would be loosely translated as ‘Life Happens’ is written in German and was successfully launched in October last year. Although it is yet to be published in English this reading will provide the first opportunity to experience the book in the English language.

Dr. Obama studied German at the University of Heidelberg, Film Production at the German Film and TV Academy in Berlin and later obtained her PhD from the University of Bayreuth in 1996. She then moved on to live in England, but returned to Kenya in 2007 where she now works and lives. In her autobiography, Auma Obama retraces her life between different worlds and cultures. She narrates how a consciousness for her African identity developed on this journey. She gives a vivid picture of the history of her family in Kenya and the life of her father, Barack Hussein Obama. A part of her life’s journey is also marked by that of her brother’s as he makes his way to becoming the 44th president of the USA.
